Haing Ngor: A Cambodian Odyssey

Authors: Haing Ngor and Roger Warner

What men must suffer
When I read this book sometime back, I was reading it just to read.As I got into the book I found it hard to put down. I cried, I got angry,I hated HATE. I lost two brothers in this mess! Whose loss is greater. Are we not all equal? What these people went through just to survive was dispicable. We take advantage of life! I fell in love with Haing Ngor, I wish I could have met him and hugged his neck. Not in a sexual way, but as a loving sister. This was the most precious kind of man. He gave of himself in a way we should all be doing. What he went through we could only imagine. To watch babies be ripped out of the wombs of women and to go from rich to poor, to watch your world crumble before your eyes and still have love for your fellow man. I have a respect for all life, we all need to open our eyes and look around. Life is a blessing and we should count ours. I love my country, and our people, but that doesn't mean I can't love others to. Haing S. Ngor was a great man who gave for all countries, and all men. He had a heart of gold. May God forgive us all for the Hate we hold.

how can one do anything but cry?
This book was my first exposure to what had happened in Cambodia. I saw a man go through a typical childhood for his class abnd become a doctor and meet the woman of his dreams. His life was perfect. Then on April 17,1975 it all came crashing down. He and the rest of his family were plunged into some of the worst conditions to ever exist in history. He survived almost his whole family. Then, he had the courage to show the whole world what had happened to his people. Sadly, this man was killed in a "random" murder in his home in LA. We promised the survivors of the Holocaust that we'd never let it happen again, but we did in Cambodia. Read this book and see why again we must try and keep it from happening ever again.

A man of extraordinary courage
This is an outstanding portrait of a man who survived the barbaric reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Anyone who has seen the movie "The Killing Fields" has a cursory understanding of the Khmer Rouge and their attempt to transform Cambodian society during their control of the country from 1975 to 1979. However, this film omitted most of the astounding atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge as anyone who has visited Tuol Sleng S-21 in Phnom Penh (as I have) can tell you. In this book Dr. Ngor relates his horrifying experiences of life under the Khmer Rouge in detail and in the process educates the reader as to just how horrible an existence it really was.

This book is remarkable because of the detail related by Dr. Ngor and the personal nature of its content. Many Cambodians to this day will not talk about his period in their lives. For many, the mental and physical abuse they suffered during this period was too painful to re-live ever again. As I read this book, I could not help but wonder how Dr. Ngor was able to keep himself together.

Dr. Ngor effectively puts the period of Khmer Rouge rule in historical context by explaining the historical events and forces which led to their capture of the country. These events and forces included the People's Republic of China, North Vietnam, the Vietnam War, the United States, and of course, the C.I.A.

I admire Dr. Ngor for his extraordinary courage, and I regret that I did not have the opportunity to meet him during his lifetime. May he rest in peace.

The Hand of Oberon
Published in Audio Cassette by Sunset Productions (October, 1992)
Authors: Roger Zelazny, Scott Karlson, and Kurt Mueller
Average review score:

A turning point
"The Hand of Oberon", the fourth book of the first Amber series, is perhaps the most pivotal. Within, many of the mysteries we've followed since "Nine Princes" are finally resolved, setting us up for the big climax in "Courts of Chaos".

In addition to enough plot twists to make your head spin, it's also notable for Corwin's first real problem with Random - who finds that he might have very personal reason to take out a sibling who Corwin considers necessary for information purposes. The fact that by this book just the thought of a rift between them makes you squirm is proof of how important their relationship has been - not only because strategically Corwin needs someone to back him up but because, in a world where so much else has been suspect, we know they honestly like eachother.

I really really like the Amber series.
_The Hand of Oberon_ is my favorite of the books in the second half of the Amber Chronicles. And that's saying a lot.

Random's missing son Martin, Dworkin revisited, more about the mysterious Dara, and the disappearance of the Jewel of Judgement-- all these plot twists are dwarfed by the big one in Ganelon's suprise for Corwin...

LINCHPIN
THIS BOOK IS VITAL TO REALLY GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE SERIES. I READ THIS SERIES YEARS AGO AND LIKED IT SO MUCH I JUST BOUGHT ALL THE BOOKS IN THE SERIES AGAIN. EXCELLANT

Happy Baby Colors
Published in Hardcover by VHPS Virginia (September, 2001)
Authors: Priddy Bicknell and Roger Priddy
Average review score:

Captivating Images for Baby!
This is a wonderful book for any baby! Each page features a different color and photos of items that are that color, as well as a baby wearing clothes of that color. The variety of items is great and the names of the items are printed next to them. The pictures are crisp and the colors are incredibly vibrant.

This book is a great way to introduce the concept of color and a number of words to children. My four month-old son loved the pictures from the first time he saw them and I'm sure this book will be one of our favorites.

Great Pictures For Early Learning
My daughter is 2 now, and she knows every single word in this book. It was an early favorite, and really helped her learn words when we read it together. She still enjoys looking at the pictures in the car, and giggles at the numerous pictures of babies in the book. It's a small sturdy book with thick chunky pages so it really has stood the battering of my toddler and chewing when she was a baby. Great book!!

Great For Babies!
My 11 week old daughter is already captivated by the pictures in this book. I lay her down and hold the book over her head and she is totally focused on the pictures, even smiles and laughs at the babies in the book. It's hard to find things to keep such a young baby entertained and this book does the trick! I plan to buy more in the series ASAP!

It's My Life Now : Starting Over After an Abusive Relationship or Domestic Violence
Published in Paperback by Routledge (April, 2000)
Authors: Meg Kennedy Dugan and Roger R. Hock
Average review score:

My path to healing started with this book
After ending an abusive relationship that lasted 6 years, I was at a loss. I questioned every feeling, every thought I had. I had no one to turn to, because his controlling and abusive behavior had surved its purpose: I was completely isolated. I started looking at self-help books, but many of them seemed inacessable or discussed how to recognize signs of abuse, not how to pick up the pieces after it was over. This book became my bible. Each word rang true, and I began to realize I was not crazy, nor was I alone. The exercises allowed me to take stock of my own life, assess where I was currently, where I had been, and where I'd like to go.

The path to healing is neverending and always full of surprises and dissapointments, but this book helped me see that I had done the hard part: I had survived. Everything I do from now on is about me, is about healing and being safe. I pick this book up to remind me how far I've come, and to help me with the parts I still struggle with. A fantastic resource.

It Is Helpful, Plain and Simple
This book is the kind of instructional manual that every woman escaping from an abuser needs to read. Every thought, fear, or impulse an abused woman may have is discussed in this very calm, very helpful book.

The authors don't shy away from the darker stuff, and they write in a very straightforward, no-nonsense fashion. Yet the book leaves the reader with an undeniable sense of hope and excitement, as this book makes the reader realize that a new, better life is possible.

A gem--very comprehensive
This book has been very helpful to me in recovering from an abusive marriage. In fact, if you only have the money for one "recovery from abuse" book, this one is the one to get. It covers every type of abuse, even spiritual abuse, which was very relevant to my experiences in a bizarre cultic marriage in which I was beaten over the head with the Bible and told to "submit" all the time. The tone that the book is written in is wonderful. It is neither "oh, you poor pathetic baby" or "get over it, toots" but strikes exactly the right tone--empowering and empathetic but not patronizing or overbearing.

The book helps you not only analyze what happened to you and why, but gets you into the healing process. This book helped me quit beating myself up for ending up with and staying with an abuser (and having SIX children with him into the bargain), for still having feelings for my abusive husband, and for being tempted to go back. Some of the exercises at the end of the chapters were kind of silly, and I skipped them, but some were excellent. The exercise that helped me the most was the one that helped me to look back and remember why I fell in love with that chump to begin with. It WASN'T because I am brainless.

The absolute best thing about this book, in my opinion, is the final chapter. Prior to reading it, I had no idea how in the world I managed to marry an abusive control freak and was scared to death of getting hooked by another one. This chapter really helped me feel capable of choosing another partner who is not abusive. The author tells you exactly what danger signs to look for. I missed every one of them the first time, but I won't miss them again!

It's My Story: ...and I'm Stickin' to It
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (December, 2002)
Author: Roger Searcy

I was there!
Roger really nails it with this book and I should know because I was there. Roger was my best buddy. He physically pulled my lazy carcass out of bed each summer morning in 1958 & 59 and dragged me to swim team practice. (I was a night person; Roger was a round-the-clock person.) I devoured the book in one sitting and have been reminiscing ever since. The characters we grew up with and the things we got into could easily provide material for two or three more books! Let's have'em Rog!

It's My Story and I'm Stickin' To It

I've been buying these books since the 80's. They contain Names, Sizes, & other details about any ship on the Great Lakes Also some great photos.

Great Book
The only book when it comes to Great Lakes Shipping. Fascinating detail and outstanding pictures. It is as fun to use as it is informative

FROM THE PUBLISHER
FROM THE EDITOR: I just wanted to clarify that this is 2000 edition, as the way it is listed here is a bit confusing. The book includes information on more than 2,500 Great Lakes and saltwater ships, full color stack and flag tables, vessel histories and dozens of color photographs. This year we also look at important milestones in Great Lakes history from the last 100 years, and honor the sisterships Arthur M. Anderson, Philip R. Clarke and Cason J. Home Landscaping: Midwest Region, Including Southern Canada
Published in Paperback by Creative Homeowner Press (March, 1999)
Authors: Roger Holmes, Rita Buchanan, Neil Soderstrom, and Creative Homeowner Press
Average review score:

Good ideas for Michigan landscaping
This book is a good source for midwest-specific plantings and landscape ideas. I found I didn't have to look up the growing zones of plants I found interesting, wondering "Would this plant grow well around here?"

I also enjoy the overall friendly tone of the text. Some other books of this type that I own are written in a stuffy, almost highbrow manner.

The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of in this book is more actual photographs of the landscapes. There are many photos of the featured plants, but the book relies heavily on artwork for the landscape design images.

Excellent resource for Ohio gardening
This book is a tremendous resource for landscaping in the midwest. It provides great ideas for landscaping for different seasons, conditions, and locations. Most of the recommended varieties of plants are easy to find at your local nursery which has always been a problem with other books I have used. The pictures and drawings really provide extreme value when trying to picture how plants will look together. It has already given me enumerous great ideas and suggestions.

An excellent resource!
A big problem I've had with gardening books is that they so often cover areas with different climates (such as the wet Pacific Northwest) than that which I have to face here in the American Midwest. This book, however, has shown itself to be an excellent resource!

It starts out with a portfolio of 23 designs, giving the reader excellent advice on appearance and what plants to use, complete with color pictures, and a sample graph paper design. After that, it has step-by-step instructions (again with great color illustrations) on building projects, such as sidewalks, walls, patios and so much more. The final part of the book is a series of plant profiles that looks at garden plants and their needs.

So, just to make everything perfectly clear, I loved this book, and highly recommend it to every gardener in the American Midwest!

Kissing Golf: The Keep It Simple (Stupid) Instructional Method
Published in Paperback by Chicago Spectrum Press (July, 1997)
Authors: Mark Shatz and Roger Drake
Average review score:

excellent book for beginners
I am not a fan of golf instruction books, but this one is a winner. Clever, creative and dare I say, witty. Dr. Shatz could easily create a series of these books using his laid back approach. What a treat to find a college professor with a common mans touch. He may have a PhD in Psychology, but Dr. Shatz could easily have a doctorate in golf. A book that will hit home with Tiger wannabees from Boston to San Francisco...especially San Francisco given Dr. Shatz's athletic and masculine charm.

An excellent buy!
With a gentle touch, Dr. Shatz touches the would be golfer in us all. I bought his book first as a gift for others and then as a gift for myself. With wit, charm and a dash of charisma, Dr. Shatz hits all the right buttons and has a certain unusual energy when he's advising all of us would be Tiger Woods to "spread our stance a little wider". This book will be a hit with weekend duffers from Boston to San Francisco given Dr. Shatz's masculine yet approachable charm.

A great aide to golfing that will improve your game easily.
I've only been golfing for 4 years. I'm not comfortable taking lessons. But reading the easy and humorous golfing book by Mark Shatz immediately improved my game. It is a quick-read with great hints on how to golf and how to improve your golf game. Readers will appreciate the clear instructions, helpful models, and humor. I recommend it to all of my golfing buddies. I even recommended it to my wife! His method brings instant results and more enjoyment to golf.

The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control: A Complete Problem-Solving Guide to Keeping Your Garden & Yard Healthy Without Chemicals
Published in Paperback by Rodale Press (June, 1996)
Authors: Barbara W. Ellis, Fern Marshall Bradley, Helen Atthowe, and Roger Yepsen
Average review score:

First Book I Grab to Solve Problems
This is a great book and the first I grab when I need to get information or to solve a problem. If I could only have one book on organic solutions I'd pick this one hands down.

Super compilation of info
I have lots of organic gardening books and this is one of the best overall. It is detailed, informative and written in an easy to understand manner. Great as a first book for the budding organic gardener.

Help with learning what is wrong -- and what to do about it
I find this book to be quite user-friendly and helpful in identifying different diseases and pests that are affecting my garden. It is also helpful as I plan what to grow because I can decide which varieties are most likely to be successful with relatively little pest and disease control effort on my part.
